HE DIDN’Tget far. He pulled over to the side ofthe road onlya
few blocks away from Terry’s apartment. He wasn’t in any shape to drive, although he was pretty sure most of the alcohol was no longer in his system. More than anything, he wanted to hear Henry’s voice, but no way was he going to call him at two o’clock in the morning. There was no one he could call. So he sat there for an hour, watching the snow fall, until he felt up to drivinghome.
JASONcounted the rings… six… it was early, barely 9:00 a.m., but surely—
“Hey, you’re up early,”Henrysaid bywayofgreeting.
“Hi. Yeah.”
“Youokay?”
“No. I… I have something to tell you.” He’d gotten in at seven; salt trucks hadn’t been out yet, and the roads were impossible, covered with snow, so what should have been a two-hour drive ended up beingalmost a four-hour drive instead.
When he walked in the front door, he discovered his dad was home for a change. Awake. Waiting for him. He ripped Jasonup one side and downthe other for beingout allnight, said he was irresponsible, disrespectful. Arrogant. He said Jason was he was irresponsible, disrespectful. Arrogant. He said Jason was no better than his mother, believing he could do whatever he pleased and not have to face the consequences. God, ifhis father had any idea…. Finally Jason escaped, but only because Dad was running late; he was supposed to have breakfast withAlicia before going to Sunday service at her church. When his dad had gotten so religious, Jason wasn’t sure, but he didn’t care. Dad’s exit meant he could shower, make himself some coffee, and then slink off to his room. By then he figured Henry might be up—or maybe he’d hoped he wouldn’t be. But he was. And this was it.
“I think this is going to be the last conversation we ever have,”Jasontold him, bitingback another sob.
“Baby, talk to me. What’s wrong?”
“I… I’m a total fuckup, Henry.” He sat on his bed, clutching the phone in one hand, Henry’s collar in the other. “Please don’t hate me.”Please say I’ve still got a chance.
“There is nothing you could do that would make me hate you, boy. Now come on, what happened?”
“I… I went out to dinner with Terry about a month ago. I… I’ve kinda beenseeinghim.”
Henrywas veryquiet for waytoo long. “Allright,”he finally said, his tone frighteningly calm. “You certainly have every right to see whoever youwant to, Jason.”
He squeezed his eyes shut. It would be easier if Henrydid hate him. “We didn’t do anythingbefore last night,”he promised, as ifthat somehow made it better.
“So you’re back together?”It was onlybarelya question.
“No. I told him I didn’t want him calling me again. He agreed not to.”
Henry let out a long, heavy breath. “So what is it you’re not tellingme?”
Before he could answer, his phone beeped, letting him know someone else was tryingto call. “Hangon. Please?” know someone else was tryingto call. “Hangon. Please?”
“I’mnot goinganywhere.”
Jason nodded even though Henry couldn’t see him. He looked at his caller ID. Kendra. Fuck. He hit Reject Calland put the phone back up to his ear.
